On November 2 and 3, 2018 Columbia’s Program in Hellenic Studies had the honour of hosting the 8th biennial MGSA Language Workshop. On Friday evening Professor Nelleke Van Deusen-Scholl’s keynote address focused on the difficulty facing heritage speakers of relatively small languages as university budget cuts disproportionately affect these programs and globalization redefines the heritage speaker. She also emphasized the importance of the less commonly taught languages in redefining the heritage speaker of today. Saturday focused on creating an atmosphere of academic but friendly discussion through the many breaks, workshops, presentations, and the conclusive roundtable discussion on the Future of Modern Greek Language Learning in Higher Education in the US.

Thank you all for attending and we look forward to seeing you next year in Sacramento.
